The Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Social Protection, Ms. Eseta Nadakuitavuki, last night officiated at the opening of the Mauri Professional Caregiving Institute and officially launched the websites for Mauri Professional Caregiving Institute and 6th Sense Event Management Pte Limited.

In her address to guests that attended the event the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, Ms. Eseta Nadakuitavuki congratulated the 3 talented and ambitious businesswomen of Rotuman descent who are also the Directors of the newly opened caregiving institute, on their milestone achievement materializing through the opening of the first ever Rotuman owned training institute in Fiji.

PS Nadakuitavuki shared that “Women are the backbone of the nation, they are our sisters, wives, mothers, aunties and grandmothers and they all have a special place in our lives. In Fiji, women’s participation in the formal economy remains significantly lower than men, making up only 34% of the labor force in Fiji’s economy. Although preferences to join the workforce or to advance within a career may vary, according to Fijian women, traditional cultural and gender norms pertaining to women’s roles and responsibilities for domestic and unpaid care work are generally the reasons behind their limited engagement in the labor force.”

The Permanent Secretary also stated that in efforts to work towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 5 – Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls; the Fijian Government has outlined through its 5 Year-20 Year National Development Plan, strategies to eliminate gender inequality and discrimination - one of which is, to support women who desire to pursue fulfilling employment and career advancement.

The Permanent Secretary further reiterated that the Fijian economy has also evolved over the years, with the Fiji Government implementing support mechanisms which encourage the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME). A testament of this commitment is being witnessed through the launching of Mauri Professional Caregiving Institute.
